Round 6.  Leuchars      Sunday 6th September 2009

WITH just 6 points separating the top three riders going into the final round of the Safe Access/ SACU backed Scottish Adult Motocross Championship last Sunday, the tension between the three riders could have been cut with a chainsaw.
After some of the best racing this year, the hardest of luck and a very nasty accident involving Flockhart who was thereafter transported to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital to have X-rays carried out on his neck and back, it was very popular 23-year-old Glaswegian rider Ross Rutherford who donned the crown of Scottish motocross champion for 2009.
English visitor James Hutchison took the overall honours on the day but the day AND the season belonged to Rutherford.
Comerton Farm, at Leuchars in Fife was the setting for the final show down between series leader and double Scottish champion Stuart Flockhart, Ross Rutherford and Tony Craig.
The circuit had been well prepared for the ensuing battles and for once a sizeable crowd appeared to witness the proceedings.
The B and C class championships would also to be decided on the day and with a small Youth contingent helping to fill the programme the day went well under cloudy but dry conditions.
Rutherford threw his gauntlet down early on by setting fastest time in qualifying with English visitor James Hutchison less than four hundredths of a second behind him as Tony Craig was just over a second behind the pole setter.
Craig Trew was on a mission to claim the Monster Energy Drink Holeshot prize money of £50 per race, and he timed his blast out the gate in race one to perfection and ripped past the big blow up Monster can first ahead of Rutherford, Flockhart and the rest of the howling pack.
Half a lap later Rutherford took over at the front but stumbled on a tight right hand mound to let the 2007 champion through.
The Deciding moment

Craig eventually grabbed the lead from Flockhart in a daring move but he too stumbled leaving the door open for Hutchison to lead the chasing Rutherford now on his tail in second.
Flockhart saw his front wheel dig deep into the deep moist sand and his bike spat him off.
He landed awkwardly on his head and neck and immediately he knew something wasn’t right.
He was protected by the marshals and yours truly as the paramedics did their thing and the championship was lost for him as he was carried to the waiting ambulance.
Rutherford got through to the lead he never lost to the flag with Hutchison and a clutch less Craig in third.
Trew was mastering the holeshots and claimed another £50 of Monster Energy money.
However, Craig took over at the front with Rutherford chasing hard, he went down and Rutherford had nowhere to go but straight into the back of him and they were both on the ground.
Rutherford got up and away leaving bent bars and a hidden leccy start button for Craig’s bike. It took a while but Craig eventually got the KTM up and running again.
Welshman Shane Carless took the lead and was never caught, taking the win from Hutchison and Rutherford.
Race three saw the predictable Craig Trew take a maximum Monster holeshot tally and £150 home.
Hutchison came into the first corner with too much speed and rammed a rider sending the Englishman to the ground and last away.
However it was a brave fight back by the youngster.
But, at the front Tony Craig was not going to be beaten as he fought off the attacks of Carless and Rutherford to take the win.
Even so, Rutherford was the new Scottish Adult champion and the family celebrations began.
In the B class Christopher Inglis took the honours on the day but Lee Robson took the championship crown after two or three races.
Jason Moore grabbed the limelight on Sunday in the C class races with Grant Fraser snatching the overall championship glory at the end of a hard season.
In the small but perfectly formed Youth races Taylor Dodds snatched victory in the MX2/ 125cc class as Aiden Christie and maximum man John Adamson took the wins in the Big and Small-wheel 85cc classes respectively.
Another maximum points haul was claimed by 65cc rider Ben Edwards.
